The city is soon going to sit for a 40-minute history class, with a difference. Renowned Bharatanatyam danseuse Kiranmayee Madapu will tell us about Indian culture and its relevance in the world of iPhone and social media through a performance based on symbolism of traditional practices. Mantra Gold Coatings, a brand specialising in idols and worship accessories, is hosting this interactive dance session to drive home the bearing of science in temple architecture and Indian heritage. "The aim of the event is to present deeper context of our culture and its relevance in the contemporary world,” says Pankaj Bhandari, the founder of Mantra and a 44-year-old ISB (Indian School of Business) graduate, adding that the event is to celebrate the first anniversary of their store in Banjara Hills.

A disciple of veteran guru Hemamalini Arni, Kiranmayee will explain the idea behind Navarasa (meaning nine emotions). “There’s a reason why one has to go through several entrances before reaching the Garbhagudi. Most of us who visit temples don’t know this,” says the 27-year-old Bharatanatyam danseuse, adding that the presentation is called Vishwakarma, a tribute to the hereditary Hindu community who played an important role in temple construction.

Kiranmayee is an engineer who quit a corporate job in two years to pursue dance as her profession. There has been no looking back since then for this young dancer. She is now the founder of Hema Arangam, a cultural space that provides Bharatanatyam and Carnatic vocal lessons in Hyderabad and promotes performing and visual arts. “As a dancer, I have learnt the significance of bronze and brass in the representation of God. The concept of Mantra strives on similar lines and that’s exactly what I have for my audience,” says Kiranmayee.

At Mantra Gold Coatings, Road No 12, Near Omega Hospital, Banjara Hills on July 29.
