After enthralling people with the heart-warming story of Anzar, set in Kashmir through the short film Tamaash, national award-winning filmmaker Satyanshu Singh is now going to give city folks a glimpse of the work that goes on behind the screen. The comedy-collective AIB is organising a one-day writing workshop, ‘Fundamentals of Screenwriting’, in the city, where Satyanshu will help ambitious filmmakers understand the concept of writing for films. It promises to be a foundation course for both beginners and experienced writers. “Not every story idea can be a film. Some might fit into a book and some might be better as a poem. Understanding this difference is important before one gets into filmmaking, ” says Satyanshu.
Meanwhile, Naveed Manakkodan, AIB’s executive producer, elaborates that this workshop will be similar to the six-month long residential course offered by the team, called AIB’s First Draft. “It’s a shorter version of it with less intensive sessions.” This being AIB’s first workshop in the city, the response, they say, has been tremendous. “The day we announced the programme, half our seating capacity was sold,” says Naveed.
While his poems have been featured in Udaan, Satyanshu's journey with AIB began in 2015 when the team decided to launch the six-month AIB First Draft. What he enjoys the most about such programmes, be it the one-day workshop or the residency workshop, he says is the exposure and freedom he gets when he works with this team. “Interacting with the participants personally makes me happy. I enjoy conducting such workshops on the weekends.” The programme will start with a 10-minute writing exercise where participants will be asked to produce a 100-word piece with their story idea. “You often see writers having a particular time and place for them to sit and write. Through this impromptu session, we will push them to go beyond that,” says, Satyanshu who will guide the students throughout the workshop with pointers and lessons to frame and edit their story idea. The workshop will also include the basics of writing characters and story-building, and is open to those aged above 15.
