A Mumbai-based book exchange meet-up, Sip and Swap, travels to Hyderabad

A unique book swap party that will be held in the city for the first time this Sunday has our attention with their tagline that reads – “Our parties don’t allow stag entries. You need to come with your partner,
a book.” Sip and Swap, an initiative to unite book lovers at one place, lets you chat over coffee and exchange books with strangers. Mumbai-based Priyesh Thakker, the founder of the party,  feels it’s all about meeting new bibliophiles and sharing one book from your library in exchange for another.
Similar to the speed dating module, the event, which was first organised in Mumbai last year, gives you five minutes with each person to pitch your book. If both of you are impressed, you exchange books. If not, you switch till you find your right partner, a book that impresses you.

This 24-year-old mass-media graduate was inspired by one of his friends who offered to give away books that she has already read. “I read her status on a social media platform and found it interesting. I first planned a tiny get-together where people could swap books,” he explains, adding that the number of people grew from 15 to 60 in the first two parties itself.  In less than a month, Priyesh received calls from Pakistan to help them organise a similar event in a library there.

Sharing a recent memorable incident, Priyesh says that he once had two buddies from Tinder (the dating application) meet for the first time at one of his parties. “This is exactly what I want. To help people grow and find happiness through love, be it books or new people they meet at my parties,”
he grins. Apart from the book exchange, the event has other activities to offer, including storytelling performances. “We once invited Anuj Khurana, a travel enthusiast, to share his experience about hitchhiking around the country. For our first show in the city, we are screening an entertainment portal, Chai Bisket’s, *Her, a short film featuring Regina Cassandra,” shares Priyesh.
