Affordable art is not an oxymoron. That’s what co-founder of the Chennai-based Forum Art Gallery, Shalini Biswajit hopes that Coimbatore will come to see at her two-day exhibition in the city. Making inroads into the burgeoning art community in the city, the showcase is aimed at changing perceptions of art lovers here and gearing them up for future workshops and exhibitions. Speaking to us ahead of the debut exhibition in the city, Shalini says that the showcase will put on display art from 28 artists. Excerpts:

Forum Art Gallery has been in the industry for over two decades now. What prompted you to consider Coimbatore as a potential marketplace for art?
Over the last 21 years, we have curated shows in India and abroad. Across the country, we have managed to create a niche in cities like New Delhi and Mumbai. The art scene in Coimbatore is slowly picking up with buyers from the city visiting our gallery in Chennai to buy art. There is a market for art in the city and we are attempting to refine and create a group of discerning art collectors in the city.

Tell us about the art that is being showcased at your debut exhibition.
The exhibition will showcase paintings and sculptures from the gallery’s studio. The show has not been curated as per a theme but is an orientation program, of sorts, to get people to understand the concept of affordable art. There are figurative paintings on mixed media by artists like Ramesh Gorjala and Chandra Morkonda, sculptures by P Elanchezhiyan and Y Shivarama Chary and more.

What’s next on the cards for Forum Art Gallery in the city?

Since we are looking at opening up avenues for collectors in the city, we will be conducting workshops and symposiums on understanding and investing in art. We also have other one-day exhibitions that are in the pipeline.

Rs 5,000 onwards. On September 22 and 23. At Collective Studio, 153 B Tea Estate Compound, Race Course.  10 am to 8 pm.
