The big band theory

Popular for their Roja cover, Hyderabad's rock band Threeory blends local tunes and classic English and Hindi tunes.
The big band theory

It was quite a difficult task to catch the Hyderabad-based popular rock band Threeory for a quick chat. Considering that at any given time it seems like they’re either in the middle of a performance or rehearsing for one. It’s not a surprise that this one-and-a-half-year-old band has more than 500 shows in their kitty already.

Though they are  a hit now, the five-piece band was actually a result of a bunch of musicians trying to fit into various groups before meeting each other and working it out. “Initially, there were three members, which is why the name Threeory. They later met the drummer and me, and we clicked quite well,” explains Syntyche Mongro, the vocalist. Besides Syntyche, the band consists of Mark Talur (keyboardist), Tarun Vishal (drummer), Sentilong Ao (guitarist) and Datta Sai (violinist). The team has grown from performing in star hotels to winning the city’s best live act award by India Nightlife Convention & Awards (INCA) last year.

Defined as a band that experiments constantly, the outfit performs different adaptations of both English and Hindi tunes. However, they like calling their genre progressive rock fusion, which is their focus while they also try jazz, pop and Carnatic. “We have always wanted to explore different genres and we continue to do that. But our focus is on three genres – progressive, rock, fusion,” shares the 26-year-old vocalist from Nagaland.

While Threeory continues to perform covers adding some local flavour to them, they also plan to release their first album with eight songs in the coming months. Apart from this, the band is also producing a song for an upcoming Telugu movie.
