Bengaluru's Live Banned ready to rock Hyderabad with their unique music

Started in 2011, this five-member comedy rock band is known to satirise and twist popular music across genres and languages that appeals to everyone. Influenced by South Indian music, Bollywood, disco and metal, Bengaluru-based, Live Banned, consists of Dheerendra Doss (Harmonium), Raveesh Tirkey (Tanpura), Sridhar Varadarajan (Sitar), Arpit Aseem (Shruthibox) and Vivian Christopher Rajan (Tamte). Find out this Sunday for yourself how they are not your average musical group, as they give you a dose of their creative music, ‘Awesome: Indo-International Mass Music’, as they call it. Ahead of their performance, we catch up with the group over a fun interview.

Excerpts:
Tell us the story of Live Banned.
Live Banned was accidentally created in the lab by professor ‘R for EverReddy’ while experimenting with explosive Bollywood and international tracks. His whereabouts are unknown. We are still trying to locate him.

Who is your lyricist and how do you plan your music?
Our lyricist is ‘Manja’ from Laxmi Bar. We are best buddies with him. He writes the words down on paper napkins when he’s sitting on the toilet seat in the morning and gives it to us secretly. It’s one of our secret formulas success. Regarding how we plan our music, it’s another secret we’ll have to tell you when you take our interview next time.

What’s the story behind your band name?
We are known for our notorious and mischievous live performances. We have been banned because we are against the Bhartiya culture. We usually perform as often as possible.
Hence, the name Live Banned.

How has your journey been?
We have done more than 300 shows in six years – from corporate shows for Google and Nvidia to music festivals across 30 cities. We also released our original album, If you park here your tyre will be air out, which is a sarcastic take on social issues. Our Indian version of Shape of You received 900k views on YouTube, 20 million views on Facebook and was shared by channels like Humor Lad and LAD Bible. Previously, our Pen Pineapple Apple Pen Indian Version also created waves. We have people writing to us regularly from various countries across the globe, telling us how they love our music and are waiting for more. It’s indeed a feat for us.

You place a lot of importance on your costumes. Are they designed by your team?
Our costumes are designed exclusively by Pasha Gents Tailor. We like to look and feel sexy. Why should girls have all the fun? (laughs) On a serious note, Indian men have a mentality of eyeing women on the street, at gigs, movie theatres, wherever. So our costumes are more like a dreamcatcher distracts bad omen and negative energies.

Your current favourite artistes.
Venu Mallesh, Dhinchak Pooja and Anu Malik.

Tell us something about your ongoing Indian tour.
It’s a part of our comeback tour. We have been absent for the last nine months. We would like to quote President Whitmore’s lines to let the world know “We will not go quietly into the night. We will not vanish without a fight. We’re going to live on. We’re going to survive. Today, we celebrate our independence day!”

What can we expect in your upcoming show in Hyderabad?
Madness and verbal diarrhoea! Symptoms involve crazy dance moves and singing at the top of one’s voice as we perform.

Ticket: Rs.299. At Heart Cup Coffee,Kondapur. On September 17, 8 pm.
