Dhruv Visvanath was seven when his mother enrolled him in a music school saying ‘women fawn over pianists’. About 20 years later, we’re quite sure his mother’s words are true, not just for pianists but guitarists as well. “That’s a funny reason for one to start learning music, but I stayed for things much bigger,” he says with a laugh. Although he stuck to the instrument for a few years, he later moved to guitar and eventually found his calling.

Four years into the indie music industry, Dhruv released his debut album Orion under Vishal Dadlani’s record label VLT and completed a nation-wide album tour with about 120 shows. He is also the only Indian to be featured in the list of 30 Great Guitarists Under 30 in Acoustic Guitar Magazine, alongside Ed Sheeran and Newton Faulkner, making him quite the prodigy. “It was silly of me to have assumed it to be a joke. When I looked at the list myself, I couldn’t believe it,” laughs the Delhi-based musician, adding that this was a milestone that pushed him to work harder for everything else that came his way later.

Known for his percussive approach and fingerstyle guitar technique, it’s also the use of human emotions and storytelling method that makes Dhruv’s music unique. “I write from a place of sadness. When I say sadness, I don’t mean love failure or heartbreak. There are other losses in life that I’m trying to express through my songs. I want listeners to be the protagonist and feel like it’s a part of their story,” he shares.

Travelling has always been a huge part of Dhruv’s life, especially in his musical journey. During his extensive album tour a couple of years ago, he embarked on a journey to visit places where his family has some history and eventually discover a part of himself. Inspired by experiences from the same tour, he has named his upcoming album set to release this month as The Lost Cause. “These spiritual journeys are lost causes of our own – we might find an answer at the end or maybe not. I took the term in the literal sense and thought, why don’t I just go and find out who I am,” shares the singer-songwriter and percussive guitarist. “Through this eight-track album, he wants his listeners to chase their lost causes to find new and untold stories,” he adds.

Having visited the city five times before, this time around, Dhruv shares that Hyderabadis can expect new content from his album The Lost Cause, among others. “Hyderabad is a happy place for me where everybody is welcoming and ready to discover new music,” he says.

On April 6, 8 pm onwards.
