DJ Amras takes you on the fast lane with his racy psychedelic music

There are quite a few things about Miguel Ferro that intrigue us. For starters, his project name is Amras, which (besides meaning mango juice in Hindi) is an elven character from JRR Tolkein’s fantasy world of Middle Earth. Secondly, he is a civil engineer who started producing hip-hop beats on a software at the age of 12. The Portuguese, who hails from Lisbon, officially launched his label in 2009, and has since produced extremely fast-paced psychedelic music that are hypnotic as well as psychotic. He describes his tracks as having “squelchy leads and twisted basslines.” We couldn’t agree more.

Ahead of his debut performance in Chennai, which is titled Alien Covenant, Miguel shares stories from his early days and admits that his musical style is still evolving, after almost a decade in the field. Over the three albums he has released so far — Infinite Connection (2011), Hypothetical Brainstorming (2014) and Ancient Explorations (2015) — as well as around 20 singles, he has delivered a consistent kind of sound that fans immediately associate with. “I would describe it as a groovy mixture of dark psychedelic sounds and high-tech energy,” he says.

At the show in Chennai, where he will be accompanied by Russian psychedelic producer Iliya Zorin, aka Groove Hunter, expect tracks from his first album and subsequent tracks like Beat It and Death Whistle. He says he has always been fascinated by Indian culture and music and frequently listens to music by AR Rahman and the late Pandit Ravi Shankar. “I also take inspiration from regional and folk music, especially the religious mantras from India, which perfectly match the energy that I want my music to bring to the dancefloor,” he says.

Miguel just finished a four-day music production workshop in Bengaluru yesterday, where he taught the basics of sound design, sound arrangement and live set programming. Coming up after his Chennai stint are three tracks, out of which two will be released in his upcoming album and the other as a live set. “You can expect the same flavour of Amras music, but a bit cleaner and with different ethnic sounds,” he shares, adding that he is working on a techno/minimal project, which will be ready for release next year.

April 14-15. 5 pm and 3 am. Venue yet to be announced.
