Fans of electronic music are having a bad week. The untimely demise of Swedish DJ and musician Avicii still tugs at heartstrings across the world. However, dance music enthusiasts in Kerala are thankful as their spirits are about to receive a musical boost. They will soon witness globetrotting superstar DJ Dyro perform at the third edition of the EDM extravaganza, Island Music Festival.

The 25-year-old artiste, who hails from Leiden, made history when he became the youngest-ever, highest new entry in the DJ Mag Top 100 DJs poll back in 2014. A self-taught music producer Jordy van Egmond, who now runs his own successful record label called WOLV, rose to fame after back-to-back chart-topping releases like Never Say Goodbye. We catch up with the artiste prior to his gig in Kochi.

* Hi Jordy. You've described your tunes to be dark, energetic, and unapologetic in the past. Does that still ring true today?
Hi! Yes, I think it does – my recent track ‘Amsterdam’ wasn’t as “dark” as my usual trap-influenced, more heavy-bass stuff – but that was still energetic and fun! It’s important for an artist to know exactly what they wanna make, but that they also don’t have to just stick to what people expect from them, you know?

* Transition from a self-taught bedroom DJ to globetrotting superstar.
It’s a long story! I was producing in my bedroom during my mid-to-late teens in-between school, I taught myself pretty much everything in the studio just attempting different techniques before one of my tracks was picked up by Hardwell. I went from being a bedroom producer to being a touring DJ in less than a year. It was overwhelming for such a young guy to be on the road and living like that, but over time I have deciphered my own sound, my own style and carved my own way in the industry. I’m proud of every aspect of my career even when things don’t develop how you expect them too.

* Career highlights
-Signing to Revealed and touring with Hardwell - and Dannic - early on in my career for sure.
-Setting up my label WOLV and having the balls to step out and release music, that was pretty out-there, for us.
-We championed some great artists like Teri Miko and I’ve met some dope producers like Loopers and Goja.

* What to expect at the event in Kochi?
At festivals I always like to take it bigger, bolder, really blow the faces off people and capture their attention – so yeah, I guess it can get pretty crazy and I know that the Indian fans can really party so I hope their energy is just as high as mine :)

* Your pick from the discography.
I couldn’t pick just one! Can I say ‘Talkin’ Bout’ with GTA? I was super-hyped to release that with those guys and it’s really raw. I also collaborated with WhatSoNot on his debut album with our track ‘Bottom End’, that felt really special, I’m such a fan of his. If partygoers want a teaser of my current sound, I would say those would be the best interpretations to signal the current music I’m making and where I’m at.

* You were doing well with Revealed, Mixmash, and Spinnin’, what pushed you to start your own record label WOLV?
I wanted complete control to champion all this new music I was hearing. I had all these dope tracks flooding my inbox from all of these producers that were super talented and most of them were unsigned, new, just trying to hustle and get their music heard in my sets. I thought, why not start our own platform and push what we want to push? My sound had also changed a lot then, from straight-up EDM to more experimental, heavier stuff, so I wanted to release that without compromise. I’ve also built up my own WOLVpack crew where we really are all like a family, the team is great and we’ve thrown parties with guests like Valentino Khan out at ADE that have been super fun. Onwards and upwards!

* Upcoming releases.
I have a new release on a label I’m hugely into – keep an eye on my social media for our announcement this week! I’ll also bring it to you at the festival! No plans for an album right now, I like moving more fast-paced and being able to expand, experiment and collaborate. I think that is so important.

* Where to next?
I’ll be off to the USA, a place I always enjoy playing and getting to catch up with friends, but I’ll also be coming back to Europe, I have a run of club shows and then I’ll also be playing once again at World Club Dome which is the world’s biggest club in Germany – they have everything from big-room to techno there so it’s a real, fun mixed bag!
