SubraMania, comprising siblings Bindu and Ambi Subram-aniam, have pushed the boundaries with their latest song by blending Carnatic music with Spanish flamenco and rock. Titled Mirage, the track has the duo collaborating with flamenco legend Jorge Pardo. “SubraMania (Ambi and I) were invited to perform for a music festival, and we invited Jorge to join us,” says Bindu when asked about how it all began. “We wrote this song for that occasion. It also has Varun Murali on guitars, Frijo Francis on piano, Keith Peters on bass, DSR Murthy on mridangam and Karthik Mani on drums,” she adds. The beats of flamenco music gel seamlessly with Carnatic and that’s what makes the song work.

The contrast between the heavy instrumental sections and delicate vocals is also noteworthy. The video for the song is shot in a documentary style. “Jorge had a documentary film crew with him the entire time he was here, and Paper Frames (the video editors) used that footage to make the music video,” Ambi tells us. “So in a sense, the music video tells the story of our collaboration with him,” he adds.

Apart from this song, the duo is working on a few other projects. “We are collaborating with musician Mahesh Raghvan to create an Indian version of the song Million Dreams, from the movie The Greatest Showman, with a kids choir from our music academy SaPa,” Bindu tells us. The song is available on the
