The song, Simtaangaran, from Tamil star Vijay’s upcoming film Sarkar has been on top of playlists ever since its release online in the last week of September. The song composed by AR Rahman, is a folk number with three voices. One of the singers is Vipin Aneja, a Delhi boy who makes his Tamil and Telugu debut with this song. The singer who was spotted by maestro Rahman back in 2005 when he was one of the winners at the Azia Dausy, a world pop music festival in Kazakhstan.

Vipin was representing India at the competition which had 23 countries participating. “I won a special award and Rahman sir invited me to be part of his Unity of Light Peace Concert. I have sung with him in Malaysia, Dubai and other countries,” says Vipin. The singer who had lost touch with Rahman for a long time, says he reconnected with the maestro on the sets of Sa Re Ga Ma Pa on Zee TV sometime last year. “In January this year, he asked me if I would like to sing a Tamil song, and I immediately agreed,” exclaims Vipin. For Vipin who is an independent musician and has worked as a playback singer in only two films in Bollwyood so far (Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster and Jazbaa), this song came as a challenge.

“I broke a lot of barriers and came out of my comfort zone. There were several nuances to the pronunciation and the detailing of Tamil. Then he (Rahman) asked me to go all out and sing it like a Punjabi song. He said ‘Give it that punch. That’s what I want from your voice.’ I never thought Simtaangaran is my kind of song but Rahman is a magician who has extracted the best out of me,” says Vipin who has just recorded the Telugu version as well.
