The story of Nanta is one of sustenance and adaptability, besides being incredibly unique. A non-verbal physical theatre comedy show, it is one of the longest running productions to come out from Korea, having premiered in Seoul in 1997. Since then, it has been presented in “314 cities in 58 countries” says Changhwan Ko, who plays the role of the head chef, adding that no changes have been made to the original script up to now. Describing the plot of the performance, he says, “The story is about four crazy chefs who have been set the impossible task by their manager of making a wedding banquet in just one hour.”

Anchoring this pulsating and energetic performance is a cast of five actors, who have been associated with this show for quite a long while. Yohwan Hwang plays the manager and has been essaying this role since 2004. Junseok Na, who joined the team in 2009, plays the well-built guy who uses his martial arts skills while handling the knives and the cutting board. The head chef is played by Changhwan Ko, who has been leading the pack for 10 years. The rest of the line-up has Junghwan Hyun, who plays the nephew of the manager, and Hyejin Yun, the only actress in the show who plays the sous chef.

The highlight of the show is the percussion that is created with the help of basic kitchen instruments, especially knives and cutting boards. “Nanta combines  the rhythm and the beat of traditional Korean music like samul nori with an improvised modern approach,” says Changhwan, adding, “We hope that we could present a thoroughly entertaining, uplifting performance which will have a long lasting, positive impact on the audience.”

Celebrating its 21st anniversary this year, Nanta has been a hit in many venues across the world. However, Changhwan lists their Broadway debut as their best ever. “It was a dramatic hit, after which we started getting invitations to perform from all around the world.” After Chennai, they will be travelling to New Delhi (November 13) and Mumbai (November 20-21).
