The wedding season brings with it its share of memories from the past, with a generation passing on its legacy to the younger brides-to-be with traditional heirlooms, such as a classic Kancheepuram silk sari. Keeping in mind wedding traditions, Ahalya Saktivel, founder and creative designer of Chennai-based brand Kanakavalli, brings to her Race Course store a three-day exhibition titled The Valli Muhurtham, starting today. “Whilst remaining symbols of timeless heritage the collection draws a parallel to contemporary trends,” Ahalya begins. The collection’s inclusion of subtle pastels in pinks, greens, and blues makes this selection of bridal saris stand out from previous wedding collections that sport the staple deep pinks and red hues.

Threads of finesse
“All our designs are distinct so that they look elegant when customarily pleated and accessorised with heavy jewellery,” she shares. The classic motifs of parrots, florals, and geometric shapes are created using zari in gold and silver, with fabrics for blouses additionally available separately, if customers prefer contrasting shades. This myriad of 35-40 limited edition saris are laboured over by traditional Kancheepuram weavers over a period of 10-15 days.

Ornate Luxury
As a part of their exhibit are also pasinam saris from their Ekavalli Foundation, an initiative to revive crafts, that notably adorn 54 golden ‘flock of parrots’ woven in adai technique.

The collection starts at Rs 30,000.
