Hello, all you fashion conscious folks! As the month of festivities has ensued already with, here’s a chance for a festive wardrobe overhaul. Ujjawal Dubey, the man behind Delhi-based label Antar-Agni, says he wanted to create edgy festive classics. That’s how his latest Winter/ Festive 2018 collection, titled ‘Begin’ was shaped. “Going beyond the emphasis on surface ornamentation, I wanted to highlight detailed cuts and layers,” says the graduate of National Institute of Fashion Technology, Kolkata.
His fall collection is characterised by unstructured lines, drapes, asymmetrical cuts, subtle prints and metallic embroideries and plenty of layering. One can see a definite melange of traditional and Western silhouettes. “We have stuck to the classics of Indian wear, yet in a way broken away from them,” says the owner of the four-year-old label.
The collection definitely has an androgynous element about his creations. Both his menswear and women’s wear boast of layers and asymmetrical sleeves. “That was the idea,” says the designer who worked with ace menswear designer duo Shantanu and Nikhil before starting Antar-Agni in 2014. For Begin, Ujjwal has stuck to handwoven cotton, linen and cotton silk with the occasional appearance of metal zari. “Fabric is my hero,” says the designer who concentrates on the drapes and textiles at the beginning of his creative process, rather than starting from the sketch board. While the women can expect dresses and kurtas, the men can also opt for brave new designs like his shirt, lungi and scarf ensemble. Ujjwal’s designs are favoured by a bunch of B’town celebrities and he says he loves dressing Ayushmann Khurrana, Ranbir Kapoor, Sonakshi Sinha among others.
