From Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh to Kanchipuram in Tamil Nadu, the one unifying exemplification of feminine Indian elegance is the silk sari. Launched by Chennai-based Rajesh, Mukesh and Shreyans Bohra, who serve as managing partners, Mokshaa looks to celebrate India’s silk heritage with the eighth edition of their sari festival, The Art of Silk.

Launched in 2003, Mokshaa has since aimed to be a destination for ethnic occasion wear, with a range of saris, lehengas and salwars for women, and shirts, trousers, kurtas, bandis, suits and sherwanis for men. Located in the heart of the city on Cathedral Road, the 15,000 square-foot store also has an online retail arm that offers delivery of their products across India.

An illustrious past

Boasting an impressive client list that includes the likes of actress Kushboo, actor Dha-nush and cricketer Dinesh Karthik, this time Mokshaa is responding to the modern consumer’s awareness of and need for socially responsible garments. “Weaving is not simply a trend; it’s our heritage, our tradition. It’s beyond fashion or trends,” says Mukesh. Admitting that there is a need to adapt according to the consumer’s needs, Rajesh adds, “The current sway is towards vibrant colours, so that is what we will be focusing on in this edition.”

Harnessing heritage

Curated primarily by Mukesh, the festival benefits from his years of travelling and exploring across the country to learn and understand Indian weaves. Expect to find exquisite silks like uppada, chanderi, tussar, kota, banarasi, kanjeevaram, and arni, sourced directly from weaving clusters in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and West Bengal. “We source finished garments from the best weavers across the nation. Our aim is to procure and market these garments to a larger customer base,” says Mukesh.

The Mokshaa festival is on for a fortnight. Opens on July 15 at Cathedral Road. Saris are priced  Rs. 4,000 onwards. Details: 44004300
