All time classics: An ode to Sari

Singapore-based designer and curator Vinti Goenka brings a range of weaves from Varanasi (Banaras), Gujarat and Andhra, just for a day to Chennai. “We are coming to the city for the third time in the past one year with a motto to curate fashion and promote different weaves of India. Vermilion by Vinti, a year-old brand, will be exhibiting some rare and stunning pieces by master weavers,” assures the 43-year-old, Chennai-born entrepreneur. Having done 11 shows since 2016 across India in cities like Hyderabad, Delhi and Bengaluru, and with a following of about 15,000 on Facebook, they are looking to set up a website now to cater to clients across India and overseas.

“The nature of this business does not allow us to do it all by ourselves or at one place. We need to collaborate with many artisan clusters to get these exclusive pieces,” says Vinti. Expect saris, dupattas, yardages and more.The zari saris can be found in different prints like shikargah, rakhtambari, rangkar and patan patola — intricately woven using a technique called kadhua of Varanasi origin. Fabrics used are primarily silk, tussar, georgette, kora and linen. “In every exhibit, we have something new to offer. We have a loyal set of clients every year, so we don’t bring repetitive designs.” Favouring lighter fabric and pastel hues this summer, their palette range comprises  of European colours like English grey, powder blue, mint green and others. However, pandering to the festive season, traditional shades of bright yellow, purple and pink are also available. `10,000 onwards.On July 1 at Rutland Gate from 10 am - 6 pm.
