Through ebony archways: Designer Nupur Kanoi SS collection debuts in Chennai

In her collection Lost and Found in Africa, which was recently showcased at LFW Summer Resort ’17, breezy summer hues found themselves being replaced by Nupur Kanoi’s favourite colour — black. Known for her prowess in giving traditional bandhani a Western spin, this time around, this Kolkata-based designer’s inspiration came from the Dark Continent. “Tribal African tattoos find their expression through the bandhani motif, while traditional body piercing is realised as glass beadwork and metallic embellishments,” says the designer. Being showcased at Collage, this line will include jumper kurtas, kaftans, saris and more.

The collection, predominately in cotton, is reminiscent of 1920s glam silhouettes and features sheer and opaque panels. High on comfort, the line has been designed as an athleisure collection with dressed-down versions of the LFW line finding space in the collection. “Heavily embroidered clothes don’t do very well in Chennai,” says the 38-year-old, with a laugh. Tweaking her line to suit city preferences, expect to find a variety of hues like powder blue, light green, and yellows.

Ask the designer what to wear for a casual evening across town and Nupur’s vote goes to a long jacket, paired up with a white tank top and high-waisted dressy tracks in bandhani. “If you are looking at easing up on the layers, then choose the long jacket, which doubles up as a dress,” she adds. The designer does let in that she is excited about the opening of her 6,000 sq ft flagship store in Kolkata, which will then extend into the launch of her Autumn Winter collection.

Rs 10,000. At Collage. Details: 28291443
