Hyderabad opens its doors to Nicobar Design Studio

When Nicobar Design Studio, opened its seventh outlet in the country in Hyderabad, sustainable sartorialists had a reason to be excited. After all, its sister concern, the two-decade-old Good Earth, has a loyal following amongst eco-friendly enthusiasts.“We started out with the desire to modernise, without necessarily westernising. The challenge was to capture a sense of India but in a contemporary way,” shares Delhi-based Raul Rai, CEO and co-founder of Nicobar, who helms the label along with his wife, creative director Simran Lal.

Painted walls
As the operations manager, Samantha Whittenbury ushers us in, we can’t help  but notice the bamboo blinds and potted-banana plants lending a tropical feel to the store. The elephant and air-balloon motifs on their walls certainly lend an edgy vibe to the décor.

Desi twist

Although we want to walk right ahead into the womenswear section, enticed by the sheen of chanderi saris on display, we hang on to explore the home décor section. The kulhar (handle-less terracotta cup)  sets and  mugs instantly seem to be the top picks. The travel section too is stocked with easy breezy dresses and bags. We also notice a clutch with a quote from Haruki Murakami and most well read fashionistas would love it.

Dots and hearts
The womenswear section has five collections at the moment, including their latest collection, titled Autumn Bloom. Crafted from natural fibres like cotton, chanderi and linen, the silhouettes seem rather classic as compared to seasonal with straight cuts, flairs and A-lines. Look out for the top picks such as the Luna Heart Dress with miniature heart embroidery. The polka-dotted and pleated Nico dress has an element of vintage chic. The latest men’s collection House of Shaolin looks towards the orient for inspiration. One thing that’s hard to miss is Nicobar’s keen attention to detail and that’s what makes them stand out.

Style Shop
There’s a lot more at the Nicobar Design Studio to look forward to! A two-day pop-up will be held on November 3 where fashionistas would be able to mix and match the latest ensembles from Nicobar with artisanal and handcrafted accessories from the Delhi-based conceptual jewellery line, NIMAI. Pooja Roy Yadav, the founder of the multi-designer platform says the two brands share a “similar sensibility” hence she decided to join forces with Nicobar for the pop-up. At the four-city Nicobar X NIMAI travelling trunk show, one can expect a curated collection from the likes of city-based Suhani Pittie, Kichu, Dhora and Deepa Gurnani, amongst others.
