It's an amalgamation of diverse cultures that have shaped Delhi-based designer, Ridhi Mehra’s Summer/Resort ’18 collection CINCO. The designer is not new to Chennai and has displayed her previous collections in the city before. Started in 2012, her label has launched nine collections till date, and some of them like Arcadia, have even gone on to feature at various editions of Lakme Fashion Week. Her designs are also favourites among A-listers like Sonam Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor, Sonakshi Sinha, Alia Bhatt, Priyanka Chopra and Anushka Sharma.

CINCO, her latest collection, shows off different elements from five different cultures —  Islamic, Indian, Spanish, French and Chinese. The label also celebrates five years of her brand in the Indian fashion industry. Owing to that special number, she decided to name her collection CINCO, which means five in Spanish. “Elements like Spanish open jackets and fringed shoulder epaulets, juxtaposed with delicate French-flared sleeves and Islamic motifs, using Indian drapes and indigenous embroideries, are highlights of this collection,” says Ridhi over a phone call. She adds that they explored various techniques, textures, prints and concept saris with the line. The collection also features alluring Chinoiserie (fabric with Chinese motifs) and Islamic prints.

Ridhi has experimented with nalki, jaali textures and a fabric called dori. “Dori is usually used for floral embroidery. Also, you’ll notice a fair bit of innovation in our designs,” adds the 28-year-old designer. Keeping with this innovation, she plays with bugle beads to create optical illusion-like embroideries and also give gotta fabric a contemporary update.

While the designer’s signature colour palette is usually bright with a lot of florals, Ridhi has decided to go monotone this time with a lot of black, ivory and muted colours. “We’ve use chanderi, silks and organza for these designs since they are perfect for summer.” In addition, she also has designs in mint green and pastel colours. Ridhi will be launching another extension of CINCO very soon, but as of now, everything is in its planning stage.
