They say it is lonely at the top, but Skyloft, the brand new rooftop lounge bar at Feathers Hotel celebrates that very fact. Perfect for those who want a bit of peace and quiet, this breezy al fresco space offers a fantastic view, some fine spirits and great music — you really don’t need conversation here.

Up in the air
As we are escorted to our seats by general manager Rupam Dutta, we quite literally stop and stare. On one side we see the peaks of St Thomas Mount; on the other, we see a concrete jungle in the making… with the industries that dot the Nandambakkam area; on the third, airplanes landing and taking off; and finally, right above you, the stars twinkling in the moonlit sky. The décor is minimal, monochromatic and classy – plush white sofas dot the 70-seater lounge.
Dutta says, “There are so many people who want to go to a space that is not really noisy like a pub or a bar at the end of the day to have a drink or a bite, either by themselves or in the company of a select few. This space is designed for those people. For the younger crowd, who want a louder atmosphere, there’s our bar, Vapour.”

The contrast is quite evident when we see that the DJ station is missing here. Instead, there is a live music stage — statedly inspired by the Bengaluru watering hole, Windmills Craftworks — which Dutta says will serve as a platform for performing artistes. While a visiting French musician plays some enchanting tunes for a relaxed evening, we comb through the extensive menu.

Old and new faves
We begin with some classics with a twist from the spirits menu, all made from grilled fruit and vegetables, blended into the cocktail. So while our delicious Mojito came with chunks of grilled pineapple, the Bloody Mary was infused with tomato and roasted chilli ground into a paste. However, the winner of the evening was the berry-and-plum take on the Collins, which had just the right mix of tang from the fruit, and the buzz from the spirit.

To go with our cocktails, we opted for the appetisers that come recommended by Head Chef KR Ganesh. There’s the standard boti kebab (inventively served in an iron box), which perhaps could have done with a wee bit more time on the grill, and a wonderfully inventive Quinoa Milanese (with a roasted garlic tip), which is crunchy and chewy in bits, just like a cutlet. Seafood lovers must try the Seafood Sausage,
which is exactly what it sounds like – a sausage made with a combination of seafood. Fans of Chinese food can sample the Pan-Fried Chicken Momo, which arrives slathered in chilli basil sauce, saving you the trouble of messy eating.
