SINCE its unveiling in April, Pan-Asian outlet, Hashi, tucked away in Kavuri Hills has managed to impress even the fussiest sushi eaters. When we heard a few of those connoisseurs rave about this unassuming little outlet we decided to find out more about the mouth-watering platters of sushi and tempura that they were talking about.

Minimalist décor
“If you are wondering what Hashi means, it is chopsticks in Japanese and Mandarin. We wanted the name to be straightforward, clear and to the point  –  the way we envisioned our food to be,” says Nishita Medha, whose husband, Sandeep Balasubramanian is the owner. Although the latter jokes, “My wife is the owner, I merely work for her,” adding that Nishita has chipped in with the décor. The hanging lanterns lend a golden glow to the minimalist décor. You can watch the chefs at work at the live kitchen gives you a chance to view your food as it is being cooked.

Chef’s special
Ushered in by friendly hosts, we made ourselves comfortable on the high wooden chairs next to the chef’s counter. To begin with, watching the chefs rustle up the batter for tempura and neatly plate up the sushi seemed to be rather therapeutic. In a few minutes time, the food was ready and served for us to sample, carefully cooked by Kolkata-based head chef Peter Liu and his team. First up was a platter of some of the sushis to try. The Yasai California Maki, comprising of freshest of ingredients, was possibly the best dish to start the meal with. Full of asparagus, cucumber, shitake mushroom and cheese roll, this variety of sushi is best savoured with just a hint of wasabi and soya sauce. Next up we tried the Ebi Tempura Maki, which is batter-fried prawn roll, with mayo and teriyaki drizzle on top. Crunchy to the core, this sushi comes highly recommended. Sea -food lovers can give the California Maki (crabstick, prawn, sweet egg, asparagus) or Shake (Salmon) Nigiri a shot.

Dim sum diaries
Before we moved on to the main course we tried an assorted platter of vegetarian and non-vegetarian dim sums. From the vegetarian platter we favoured the Crunchy Vegetable Dim Sum because of its balanced taste. The Spinach and Cheese Dim Sum, had a strong aftertaste and is strictly for those who are ardent lovers of Popeye the Sailor man’s favourite food. The platters on offer could be quite filling even if you haven’t ordered a starter. We tried the Teppanyaki Fried Rice with Chicken in Butter Garlic sauce. Loaded with fresh vegetables and juicy chicken, this could serve as comfort food. The authenticity of the dishes is preserved by importing most ingredients like asparagus or flying fish roe used in California Roll. Lastly, the health enthusiasts can heave a sigh of relief as no Ajinomoto is used in the food here.
