Deepika Rajadas wants to be able to dine in an amusement park. “I saw this movie where after everyone went home, they lit up the rides with fairy lights, and that set the mood for dinner,” she says. For the moment though, she is channeling her ideas into curating food experiences around ‘interesting venues and interesting chefs’ through her newly launched project — Madras Gourmet Society.
With an open menu promoted entirely through social media, the hope is to make the fine dining experience more accessible to young people, and yet with limited slots and bookings that close a week ahead of their first event on November 24 — still ascertain a sense of exclusivity. Cordon Bleu chefs Shriram Rajendran (the man behind The Table) and Mathangi Kumar (of That Madras Place) will collaborate to whip up a four-course feast. Expect white-wine based pumpkin risotto and prawns marinated in tequila.
This will be alongside glasses of Bodegas Juan Gil Pedrera Rose Folonari Merlot IGT and Folonari Chardonnay d’Italia sourced from Spain and Italy. Imagine all of this in the midst of vintage floral decor organised for one night only at the recently opened restaurant By The Bay in VGP Golden Beach Resort.
In case you’re wondering like we were, this is not a potpourri of catering from more than one restaurateur. In this format, the venue simply lends its kitchen to inventive chefs for an evening, allowing them to step out of their own niches to push the envelope and surprise us.
