Sand clocks & treasure chests with your cappucino?

Grey gates are  flanked by  sunshine yellow panels. The board reads, ‘Aegam decor cafe,’ and there is a logo of a thumbprint smack in the centre. We understand why when we learn that “aegam” in Tamil means ‘unique’. Located in the suburbs of Tambaram, this month-old space flaunts quaint pieces that call on our attention long before we get to the eggetarian menu. Sand clocks and treasure chests top our list.

Expect mismatched rows of tables and chairs — a coffee coloured sofa, a bar stool in the corner and a shelf packed with cushions. We take our seats near the counter. You can also choose to dine in one of the more  interior  rooms for a little privacy.

After the tour, we aren’t surprised to find out that owner Sudha Seenivasan is an interior design graduate. “This was an old cotton-candy coloured house before we transformed it into what it is today,” she recalls.

Returning home to India after a 10-year stint in the US working as a techie, Sudha is brimming with creative energy.  “I wanted my space to be memorable and offer the feeling of home at the same time just like the potti kadais from my childhood,” she shares with us.

Our cups of cappuccino arrive at this point. We take a sip — it’s creamy, with deep flavours, and is slightly bitter. A perfect cup. “The beans are from Coorg, it’s organic,” Sudha says. But she doesn’t reveal the name of the plantation. “I can tell you that these beans are exported to Italy.” Their cappuccino is not just about the art on the froth.

The caffeine works wonders and a vivid zebra painting on the wall catches my attention. “The paintings and the decor pieces are for sale,” says Sudha. These include Buddhas, candle stands and shining baubles-on the tall shelves have been sourced from Thailand, Singapore and Cambodia. “I want the food to taste just like how it would in the country it is from as well…” she says, as we sample Alfredo Pasta that she claims is as close to the real thing, generously topped with grated parmesan cheese.

With a menu curated by Sudha, look out for a rasamalai cupcake this festive season. A small ball of rasamalai sits on top of a yellow frosting surrounded by bright green pistachios and dried rose petals. Bite into the moist cupcake and the saffron-flavoured cream is bound to trigger a craving for the rich Bengali sweet. A perfect pairing with this cupcake is the punchy paan mojito. With dining extending into the backyard area as well, concerts are planned in the pipeline as well .
