Knowledge-sharing platform Quora may explain scientifically, and perhaps a bit awkwardly, that candlelight dinners are romantic as people look more attractive (and tolerable) in dim light and hence rekindles the romance. But Olive Bistro’s Lovestruck Wednesday candlelight dinners seem romantic for an entirely different set of reasons. First is the pleasant summer evening breeze from the banks of Durgam Cheruvu, amidst the concrete jungle called Jubilee Hills. Next could be the alfresco setting with a few twinkling stars creating magic right above you as you dig into some sumptuous food. I loved the aroma emanating from their herb garden. Or perhaps it is city boy George Hull playing slow numbers on the Saxophone.

Oh what a view!
Oh what a view!

As I entered the alfresco area opposite the restaurant with my husband, the usher led me to a corner table with the best views of the lake. While I expected he would light up an aromatic candle, he switched on two translucent tea lights. Oh well, candles go synthetic. The lights were not so bright that you could read the menu (the smartphone torch came handy), it was just right to make me look into the eyes of my husband of 14 years. Ah well, eye contact can be romantic. We started off with a glass of Shiraz red wine and a syrupy sweet  and coloruful Green Apple Kiwi Delight. Unfortunately for those of us who are addicted to the air-conditioners, the drinks may seem to have gotten a bit warm. So we reordered for wine on the rocks. The mocktail was sweet, and romantic too with two entangled straws, for effect.  As Olive’s cuisine is predominantly European and Mediterranean, there was a wide variety to choose from the main course. The Maple and Chipotle Grilled Roast Chicken was tender and mildly spicy, apt for the evening.

We ordered the Nutella French Toast, a warm brioche stuffed with homemade Nutella dipped in sweet custard and served with nuts over ice cream, it was decadent and the chocolatey flavour really made me fall in love again... with the dessert of course. Says Shaaz Mehmood, Partner, Olive Group, Hyderabad, “We have always attracted guests looking out for some “us” time. Keeping this in mind, we’ve crafted this concept.” Considering most weekends are dedicated to IPL now and movie watching in the multiplexes, this seems to be a great way to get some romance back into life.

Love-struck Wednesdays on till July end. Price for two: Rs 2,500.
