Mumbai’s Bar Stock Exchange opens for business on MG Road

The Bar Stock Exchange

Bengaluru has seen many stock exchange-style pubs open (and close) in the past year. But the pioneering brand in the business has always been Mumbai’s The Bar Stock Exchange, with 11 outlets in Mumbai. They now open their first outlet in the city on MG Road. We visited for a sneak peek.

For those who are unfamiliar with the concept, the bar has TV screens and an app where the prices of drinks go up and down according to rules of supply and demand, similar to the real stock market. Prices can go down to as low as Rs.19 for a shot, and in many cases lower than the MRP.

The sprawling property has army-themed interiors and decor, including a jeep sitting in one corner. We sat down for dinner and drinks with the director, F&B, chef Gaurav Gidwani. “Our menu has food that you want to eat when you are drunk — spicy and greasy,” he explains, adding, “While we have retained some favourites from the Mumbai menu, we have added some local dishes as well.”

While their dishes are regular bar eats, they all have a local twist to it, in terms of either the dips, or the masala. For example, the Calamari Thecha, is squid tossed in traditional Marathi Assal thecha masala. One of our favourites was the Misal Pav Fondue — a cheesy misal mix, served with buttery croutons. Another street food classic that makes its way into the menu is momos. Their Mushrooms Potstickers have a cheesy crust on the outside that doubles the flavour and texture quotient.

While we suggest you stick to appetisers, should you crave something substantial, they have that covered as well, with a selection of dishes best described as comfort food. We enjoyed their bowl of Palak Dal Khichdi, served with papad and pickle. Grilled Fish with ghee rice, podi butter and a spicy coconut milk-based gravy was also impressive.

So whilst there have been several other bar stock concepts that have opened earlier in the city, we think TBSE, with its brand name, quality and location will be the one that makes a mark.
