The term “vegetarian restaurant” comes loaded with misconceptions and even vegetarians probably won’t associate it with fun evenings out. This is exactly what Amit Ahuja, the man behind The Open Box and Misu, is trying to change with his new venture Housefull. The vegetarian restaurant has quirky Bollywood-themed interiors, an eclectic menu and is located in the heart of Sheshadripuram. The mocktails and drinks on the menu are all inspired by Indian flavours. We tried the refreshing Chhaas, available in flavours such as cucumber, ginger and curry leaves. We also liked the Guava Mary, a twist on the classic Bloody Mary.

The menu boasts 40 small plate options, each more unique than the other. They have taken regional Gujarati and Sindhi snacks and given them an international twist with exotic flavours. Take for instance the Thepla Tacos — mini theplas stuffed with paneer and refried beans, a winning combination of Indian and Mexican cuisines. The Masala Khakhra is khakhras topped with basil pesto and cream cheese, and was a favorite on the table. The Cheeseling Bhel, Cheeseling tossed with piquant sauces, takes you right back to your childhood.

Health nuts can try the Makhana and Nuts Masala. Instead of peanuts, they are made with the very trendy fox nuts along with cashews, almonds and pistachios. The Street Style Sweet Corn is another winner. Half steamed and half fried, we loved the crunch on this one. Another recommendation is The Mini Dal Pakwan, small puris topped with Bengal gram mix — a great combination of textures. Other options include Khoki Roti, Pav Bhaji with mini buns and the Masala Khari.

The Dal Makhni and the Paneer Tikka Masala were well-made, but they were nothing out of the ordinary. It was their breads that were the highlights. The Pickled Onion Naan and the Chili Cheese Naan were the best in our opinion. Also try the Taftan, a Persian leavened bread. The desserts at Housefull are equally innovative. We recommend the Pista Kulfi coated with Bournvita and served with caramel popcorn. Another light option to finish to the meal is the Guava Ice Cream topped with red chilli powder and salt.
The fun vibe of the place is complete with menus designed like old Bollywood magazines and filmy graffiti. Housefull seems like a refreshing break from the other restaurants in the area.
