Experience the flavours of Sonargaon at Masala Klub

The Taj West End has pulled out all the stops to give its patrons a royal Bengali feast. Sonargaon at Masala Klub features a special menu with dishes inspired by the Zamindari kitchens of the region, specifically of Sonargaon, think luscious and fragrant curries, fluffy luchis and all the other trappings that come with the quintessential Bengali meal.

We visited on a pleasant evening to sample the menu. The dinner was kicked off with an Aam Poro Sorbot, a pulpy drink of roasted raw mangoes and cumin.  Just the right balance of tangy, sweet and smokey, this was a great start. The Mansher Chop, cutlets, with a filling of potato and mutton, were also on point.

This was followed with a quick succession of flavoursome curries, that went rather well with the accompanying luchis. The Chingri Malai Curry, a treat of subtle flavours, saw river prawns in thick coconut cream, while the Bengali favourite, Kosha Mangsho, featured mutton cooked to perfection in an aromatic gravy of masalas sourced from Bengal.

Vegetarians can tuck into the Aloo Jhinge Posto (Potato and ridge gourd cooked in poppy seed paste) or Narikel Diye Cholar Dal (Bengali style chana dal preparation with coconut and ghee), both of which were hits at the table.

We drew the decadent meal to a close with Misti Doi (sweetened yoghurt), Rosogolla, Sandesh and Nalengurer Ice Cream. Of the four, the ice cream (jaggery flavoured) was our favourite.

Rs,4,000++ for two. Until September 16. At Masala Klub, Taj West End
