The all-new menu of Farzi Cafe is fusion at its best

Look out for Curd Rice Tikki Chaat, Butter Chicken Carbon Bao and Khubani and Maple Cake in the six-month-old restaurant in Hyderabad.

There’s nothing better than starting a weekend with delicious food and pop music like Imagine Dragon’s Believer. When we learnt that Farzi Cafe introduced a new menu, we couldn’t help but book our tables. And if I tell you I was at the six-month-old restaurant on a Friday night, you know exactly what I mean – the best of fusion food and chartbusters.

The warm summer evening has us craving for something sweet and cold. As if taking a cue, we are immediately served the signature Bengali dessert, Mishti Doi (in the form of an oval-shaped ball topped with mango and pista) as amuse-bouche, which we are supposed to take all at once, like a shot. As we wait for our dishes to arrive, Sous Chef Kuldeep Singh Rana tells us that the new menu has dishes from all parts of the country including Kolkata, Delhi and Karnataka. Our attention quickly shifts to the first salad being placed on the table – Curd Rice Tikki Chaat.

Our first thought of the dish is that it’s quite unusual to start a meal with curd rice, which is usually served towards the end. However, when we take bites of the chaat, we’re convinced to change the order, provided the dish is as flavoursome as this one. Next up is the Chilli Chicken Patti Samosa, paired with sulemani chai chutney. Although a tad bit oily, this street food-inspired starter is quite tasty, courtesy the generous amount of in-house masala.

Among the list of small plates, our favourites were Tandoori Paneer Salad and Four Cheese Chicken Tikka

For the mains, we choose Butter Chicken Carbon Bao. Although the evergreen butter chicken was just as delicious, the carbon bao doesn’t make much of a difference in taste or texture, making this dish a bit of a let-down. From the vegetarian section, we try Spaghetti Aglio e Cocco with Tamatar Ka Kut. This one makes up for the previous disappointment, thanks to the tomato sauce that gives this dish an Indian flavour.

Hyderabadis sure love their Khubani Ka Meetha, but can you imagine it in the form of a cake? The Khubani and Maple Cake, served with tutty fruity ice cream and a thin saffron crisp, tasted like a piece of heaven.

If fruit-based sweet doesn’t interest you, we’d recommend you to try the Flourless Chocolate Cake.
