After our brief call with Sanjay Kumar, the owner of Dirty Burgers, we were quite excited to try their sloppy burgers, which he claims were inspired by the ones served at highway diners in America. When we visit the restaurant on a Monday evening,Childish Gambino’s This Is America playing in the background adds to our great expectations. “From the chartbusters of American pop music to interiors similar to that of a roadside burger joint in the West, we were keen on keeping up the vibe for a young crowd. We also try and hire people below the age of 35,” says Sanjay actor and entrepreneur, as he ushers us in the 45-seater outlet in Film Nagar.

“I’ve lived in the United States for a couple of years and my favourite thing about the country are their highway motels and burger joints. That’s where the idea of selling fresh American burgers came from,” continues Sanjay, who co-owns Dirty Burgers with his wife, Anukriti Dixit. Sipping on their energising Lemon Ice Tea, we take a quick tour of the space. We spot TV series wall murals  — Game Of Thrones, Breaking Bad and Peaky Blinders. Ardent fans of Suits and Dexter, take note, as you will find some of your favourite one-liners from the shows here too.

The restaurant is divided into two parts — indoor and alfresco area, which has a rustic look, courtesy the highway inspired décor. Think tyres as chairs and oil cans as bulbs attached to a lamppost on a stone flooring. Finally settling down in an outfitter tent, we flip through the menu, which offers burgers, pancakes, all-day breakfast and salads. There’s also a special edition menu that is a result of experiments by aspiring chefs during their internship with the restaurant.

Get sloppy
Before you dig into the burgers, remember to read the disclaimer on the menu: ‘If your burger is dripping, don’t shy away from licking’. We follow the same, as we bite into the Signature 9 to 5 Burger. Covered with a generous amount of sauces and veggies (lettuce, onion and tomato) the handcrafted chicken patty is tender-cooked and the burger could make for a meal in itself. Sips of Lemon Ice Tea makes for a great combination. The burgers here are served with a side of Peri Peri Fries and in-house sauces, while the buns are specially using a secret recipe by the team. We also sample their Sweaty Palm Burger. This one is filled with shredded and juicy chicken, which goes perfectly with the tangy sauce. Vegetarians can opt for the Dirty Veg Burger.

To say that you might find it difficult to stop licking the sauce off your hands is not an exaggeration. The sauces define the burger and you can soon buy them too, as they will be patenting and selling them at their branches (including the new ones to be opened in Kompally and Road no 45).

At Film Nagar. Price for two: Rs.800.
