It is not uncommon to use auditory expressions to describe design. In an age of excess when designs and colours scream for attention, Coimbatore-based interior design house is biased in favour of muted tones and aesthetics where less is more. Capturing western vintage sensibilities with an Indian identity, Broken Plank caters to the millennial generation that is looking to declutter without compromising on luxury. Having worked on commissioned projects, entrepreneur Sathiyanseelan G says the idea for Broken Plank came from a need to create minimalistic designs and contemporary styles that would not break the bank. “Nothing gives me greater pleasure than seeing original designs that I have worked on in a customer’s space,” says Sathiya.

Finish in sight
Emphasising the beauty of the wood that he is working on, all pieces from the brand are hand carved and shaped from woods like teak, pine, rose and rubber. “Showcasing the natural beauty of the wood, the finishing on most of our furniture affords the natural colour and grains of the wood,” he shares, adding that they offer extreme teak finishes that continue to be popular among customers. The collections at Broken Plank are a combination of furniture that uses reclaimed material and salvaged wood and treated wood sourced from vendors. “The reclaimed wood options that include stools and side tables are a recent addition,” he says. Consider the live edge side table that doubles up as a console table.

Style on a tile
With pieces so intricately made that they could take up to two weeks, all products up for sale by the month-old brand are personally made by the 29-year-old interior design diploma holder. Having introduced a new range of tiled wooden stools over the last few days, Sathiya tells us the tiles were custom made with bespoke doodle designs that he created. “My creativity begins with a notebook and a pen. Most times I have one with me in which I’m usually doodling.”

Form and function
Besides offering vintage-inspired shabby chic cupboards, drawer cabinets, bookshelves and racks in a single colour, Sathiya has a penchant for Bohemian floral mandalas. Placing functionality on par with design Broken Plank ensures that each of their designs combines aesthetics with functional storage, like their teak centre table that offers additional storage space in the hollowed out centre. “We are exploring multiple avenues of design. But, bottom line we are about intelligent house design.”
