India cannot think of anything but the pain and agony of the Kathua rape victim. Thousands have taken to the streets across the nation to host candlelight vigils and stage silent protests. Our social media feeds too are flooded with well-intentioned armchair activists. But, unbeknownst to us, there is a dark and disgusting parallel undercurrent that is surfacing on the internet.

It is with a heavy heart that we report that the biggest trending keyword, searched by Indian users, on a popular pornographic website—is the name of the Kathua rape victim. Yes, you read that right! The perversion of a large number of porn consumers is putting India to shame—as it is evident in their sickening attempts to search for rape videos of the eight-year-old girl on the website. The very first keyword in the India trends section of the website is the name of the victim, A*if*.

Though it needs to be stated that the website does not host such content, a recent survey conducted by a leading publication, states that the tendency to watch such videos arise from ‘an inherent tendency in human beings to be voyeuristic witnesses to miseries befalling others.’

Adult entertainment websites are responsible for a large percentage of India’s internet traffic. Alexa, the global traffic ranking programme, estimates that the aforementioned site is amongst the 20 most-visited by Indians in 2018—with a new page being visited by the same user every 10 minutes and 46 seconds. That shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone. In fact, another adult website, recently released its latest annual website report where it ranked India as it’s third-biggest customer base (behind the US and UK).
