How does piloxing work?
Antara: It’s an hour-long cardio programme combining boxing, standing pilates, simple dance choreography and 15 minutes of a floor-workout, including exercises for your abs and glutes.

Mahek: It also helps you with your anatomy in terms of posture correction and spine alignment. The best part is that it is safe for people with knee, back problems and people with arthritis or diabetes as well.

Is it twice as effective with weight loss — or do we settle for twice as fun?
Antara: It’s definitely twice as effective with weight loss. You can lose anything between 400  to 1,000 calories an hour.

How did you guys get into it?
Antara: I came across this format through Sucheta Pal (Zumba Master trainer) who was the first piloxing instructor in India. As piloxing training was not available in India, I went to Singapore and got trained under Viveca Jensen, the Swedish-based dancer who started it all. And I was instantly hooked.

Mahek: I’ve been dancing since I was a kid. Then I came across piloxing through friends in Malaysia, and went there to get certified. I also have certifications from the Aerobics and Fitness Association of America (AFAA) and the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) so my workouts are as safe as they are effective.

Are there any misconceptions around this fitness style?
Mahek: People often think it’s just dance because the workout is music-based, but it’s a proper interval training programme which let me tell you, will take your fitness goals to another level.

Why are shoes not encouraged?
Mahek: The feet have second largest proprioceptors in the whole body. So going barefoot helps balance, as well as strengthens the ankles and knees.
