Moving away from mundane fitness routines, Hyderabadis are now opting for dance-based exercise regiments. Ask Hyderabad-based Vyshnavie Sainath, who runs the dance and fitness school, Vyshanvie Natya Center. “This year, there has been a drastic increase in my student count. People have become more aware of the importance of these fitness measures,” informs Vyshnavie.

The 27-year-old aims to increase mind and body coordination by blending together various forms of dance and martial art. For instance, her Kalari yoga paired with Bharatanatyam moves has been a hit, garnering her double the number of students than usual in  recent times. “A fusion of styles like help people to connect with their culture, apart from building on your strength,” says Vyshnavie, who started her dance school at 21. Kalari yoga is a mix of Kalaripayattu (a martial art that originated in Kerala) with asanas, which helps in improving flexibility. Most of her new students are from the corporate world, she says, adding that they have a curiosity to learn something new, while they also want to stay fit.

An avid learner – be it dance moves or yoga asanas, Vyshnavie is trained in Bharatanatyam, Odissi, Simhanandini and Kalaripayattu among other contemporary dance forms. The dancer-turned-teacher brushes off the myth that one needs to take foundation classes to be able to dance. “One need not have any previous background in dance as these classes are designed to be easy so people can catch up,” Vyshnavie says.
