If you are one of the 105 million followers of Beyoncé Knowles on Instagram, then you are going to love this. And even if you aren’t part of the Beyhive, Archana Mani, head of business management at PedalBeat tells us that it’s alright to take a couple pointers from Queen Bey if you’re looking for fitness inspiration. While the Lemonade singer is the latest celebrity to swear by spinning classes, the city’s first indoor flywheel spin class, PedalBeat, is a 600 sq. ft. studio that is headed by a team of three certified trainers. Now all the rage, they offer a combination of low-impact high-intensity cardio working and strength training packaged into one 45-minute bike ride.

Must-have essentials :A fitbit. It’s not only sleek and stylish but helps moderate my cardio activity through the day

1. How does spinning work?

It is a 45-minute low-impact high intensity cardio workout that is conducted to music and includes bursts of sprints, hill climbing and jumps which get your heart pumping and builds endurance. The classes are structured such that the trainer and the people riding with you act as great motivators. Something that you will need since your quadriceps, glutes and hamstrings will be put to the test.

2. The workouts are aimed at increasing lower body strength. So wouldn’t runners, marathoners or cyclists benefit most from it?

Besides burning up to 600 calories in a single hour, spinning is considered to be one of the most comprehensive fitness routines. It acti-vates your core and lower back muscles as well and is for people across the fitness spectrum. At PedalBeat, we also incorporate a little bit of strength training using light weights for the overall body workout.

3. Despite the intensity of the workouts, spinning is one of the easiest to overdo. How should one avoid the overkill?

It is easy to get carried away in a group setting especially when the trainer is shouting on the podium “let’s spin those legs, last 30 seconds left!” Your body loses up to a litre an hour in sweat, so you need to make sure you are hydrated properly. Other things to remember are setting up your bike properly, knowing when to increase or decrease resistance and engage your core.
