Ride review: The 8th generation Volkswagen Passat is a dynamic executive sedan

The all-new Passat is a car that does everything just right and offers a fine blend of performance, elegance, technology, and comfort. This is the 8th generation version of this global bestseller and with time the sedan has just gotten better. It manages to carry that understated elegance very well and is a joy to drive.

Built tough
The vehicle scores big in the looks department thanks to its clean uncluttered look. Sharp crisp lines and that typical Volkswagen treatment to the headlights and front grille make it instantly recognisable. It is a big car, however, the sleek look does a good job of masking the size. It does offer a hint of sportiness thanks to the fact that the car is now wider than the outgoing model. It’s built on the MQB platform and is a little over 70 kilograms lighter than its predecessor. Having said that, the car boasts of a higher level of
rigidity which has played a role in improving driving dynamics as well.

Comfy interiors
The Passat boasts of a very spacious cabin that offers an amazing amount of room for all passengers on board. On top of that, it has been kitted out with fine materials and you also get a wood finish strip on the dashboard and doors to add that touch of class. Further to that, this automobile comes packed with creature comforts which include a panoramic sunroof, a high-end touchscreen infotainment system, rear air-conditioning vents, steering mounted controls, park assist, app connect, and a fine audio system as well.

Refined performance
Powering the new Volkswagen machine is the tried and tested 2.0-litre TDI diesel engine that generates 177 PS of power and delivers 350 Nm of torque.  Paired with a six-speed automatic DSG transmission, it is rather efficient as well, with an ARAI-tested efficiency of 17.42 kmpl. You cannot find fault with the way the power is delivered and the vehicle doesn’t disappoint when it comes to delivering all that power. The driving dynamics are spot on and the car remains composed at high speeds. The German carmaker has kitted out this automobile with multiple drive modes that include Eco, Comfort, Normal, Sport, and Individual.

Verdict
The new Volkswagen Passat is a car that gets everything right. It’s powerful, spacious, comfortable, feature-rich, and high on safety too with nine airbags, ESP, ABS, ASR, Hill Start Assist, Auto Hold, and a tire pressure monitoring system offered as standard equipment. You can’t go wrong with this car and it has been priced rather well with the Comfortline on offer for `29.99 lakh and the Highline priced at `32.99 lakh.
