Even though a friend named his debut showcase Ra in Malayalam, artist Azeer MJ reads many meanings into it. He believes that it’s a dichotomy which represents both a finished work as well as an open-ended project.
As this Kozhikode-based artist—currently pursuing a Masters degree in painting at the College of Fine Arts, Thiruvananthapuram — presents to the city nearly 500 paintings and drawings from his oeuvre, he says that it amounts to eight years of observations.“This show is a sort of an experiment on how the crowd receives an artist who delves deeper into the creative process,” says Azeer, about how this is a part of his self-education on the various aspects of his art.

The compiled collection has been finished on multiple surfaces—mostly obtained without burning a hole in his pocket—including carton pieces from shops or paper which go to waste. “The essence of each work is in capturing the mood of the subject and this more often than not affects its form,” says Azeer, who has previously worked with famed sculptor Jeevan Thomas.
For each enthusiast heading to witness his showcase, the creator places as reference the practises and works of painters like Pablo Picasso, Austrian Egon Schiele and surrealist Salvador Dalí. Azeer’s works also  draw from portrait studies, in mixing and matching the colours and expressions of various figures encountered in his day to day life. Placing his artistic rituals on the foreground, the 28-year-old says that institutionalised academics has given him limited scope to pursue his passion.

At BC Gallery, Mattancherry
