The experimental rock band Zokova came together in 2014 when drummer Suyash Gabriel and bassist Amar Pandey joined guitarist Ritwik De in his solo work. Their sound is inspired by diverse influences such as Sigur Ros, Tool, Radiohead, Igor Stravinsky, Nine Inch Nails and The Beatles. They head to Bengaluru tonight to perform live.

Zokova plans to release an album early next year. “The album consists of two characters. We like to think of them as one’s consciousness or two separate people, but that’s for people to interpret,” explains Suyash, adding, “The heavier side of our sound represents a decline from loneliness to madness, while the mellower side represents solitude heading toward loneliness. It’s about how the two meet. It’s a play on the distinction between the two and that sparked the idea behind the themes of this album.”

The band just wrapped up a gig at the NH7 Weekender. “It was great! We wish we got to play a bit longer because we had a lot of fun, but we were overwhelmed by the warm response and by how many people came to watch us,” he says about the experience.

At the upcoming gig, they will play songs from the album and guests can expect some instrumental, experimental, emotionally charged music. “We’ve all played at The Humming Tree individually at different points and we’ve had fantastic shows there, so we’re very excited to come there as Zokova. We’re also watching the new Star Wars movie the morning of the show. We’re quite excited for that too!” he ends on a lighter note.
