Gurupriya Atreya grew up with mehfils and chamber music concerts at home which used to be organised by her mother. In an effort to re-introduce this age-old tradition, she, along with her husband Akhil, host The Living Room Kutcheri in their home every few weeks. This weekend, listen to musician Vasu Dixit perform from his project, the Vasu Dixit Collective and some popular tracks by his band Swarathma.

“I really wanted the whole thing to be a curated series, at least initially, so I have picked artistes I would love to work with and who are also friends of mine,” Gurupriya tells us. She wanted the space to be versatile and not just restricted to Carnatic or classical music. In the next few months, she plans to host a blues gig, a storytelling event and even a Bharatanatyam performance.

The whole atmosphere is organic. There are no microphones or speakers, so the sounds are very raw. That’s exactly what attracted Vasu to the event as well. “It will be a unique experience for me because this is not a big stage gig, and there are no amps and no mic — just me and my guitar.” Although there is no entry fee charged, guests are encouraged to make small contributions to support the artistes.

Entry by registration. June 24, 6 pm. At Malleshwaram. Details: livingroomkutcheri@gmail.com
