Catch Hyderabad's SS Negi perform at Lamakaan this weekend

Surendra Singh Negi, popularly known as SS Negi, might have been away from the music scene for a long time, but is definitely confident about his comeback with his upcoming show in Lamkaan this weekend. “It’s going to be a mix of songs – my band’s album Safar and a few other originals of mine,” reveals the 38-year-old guitarist.

While Goa-born Negi travelled across cities including Mumbai and Delhi, the only thing that always stayed with him throughout was his passion for music. After his education, he began teaching Spanish in the Delhi University in 2004. “I did compose a couple of songs during my early years in Delhi, but it was for myself,” says Negi. Later, he moved to Hyderabad in 2009 to teach Latin American Studies in English and Foreign Language University (EFLU).  Though the shift was for professional reasons, Negi agrees that it was only then that he decided to take his music to the audience. “I started off by jamming with musicians I knew,” says Negi, who is also a lyricist. He then founded his band Indian Folks in 2012 which fuses Indian folk with classical music and soft rock.

Negi is not one of those songwriters who chooses a time and sits down with pen and paper to write a song. For him, both poetry and songwriting comes naturally, as a reflection of daily life and a product of his subconscious mind. Explaining this further, he says, “My team and I were travelling in a train when I saw a ticket collector misbehave with a group of passengers because they didn’t have tickets. This affected me so much that at 5 am, I began to strum my guitar and that was when I composed my song, Shehar.” Primarily a writer in Hindi, he has also written a couple of compositions in Spanish.
Talking about inspirations, Negi seems to like the music back in 1990s and 2000. Growing up, his favourites have been Los Piojos, an Argentine rock band and Silvio Rodríguez, a Cuban musician. Back home, he enjoys the music of the popular fusion rock band, Indian Ocean.
