DJ Candice Redding is clearly a woman at the top of her game. She is inimitable. When this artiste takes charge of the console, the result is an energetic musical set comprising groovy tunes of electronic, deep techno house and a lot of other genres in between. No wonder, this makes her one of the most sought-after DJs in India and abroad. This weekend, the DJ brings to the city the same level of high-spirited music with specially curated visuals offering a 360-degree experience, as she likes to call it.

Candice started her journey after watching Dutch DJ Armin Van Buuren perform in Johannesburg, South Africa, a decade ago and now headlines festivals and club nights all over the world – from Sunburn, and Supersonic to Enchanted Valley Carnival and Timeout 72. “I was mesmerised by the experience Armin created in the concert. However, what really got me into DJing was a joke that a friend cracked during my obsession with the genre –  ‘Why don’t you just become a DJ?’,” shares Candice. She did give that a serious thought and there was no looking back. After setting up a home studio, she practised every day and eventually got the world to listen to her distinct set of beats. So what’s behind the extremely spirited music she offers when she’s on the console? “I have a pre-gig ritual of drinking coconut water. Nine out of 10 times, I end up having a conversation with my fans via Instagram stories or Facebook live,” she informs us.

A South African DJ of French-Canadian descent, Candice was initially influenced by a lot of American artistes including Cher, Frank Sinatra and rock bands like Beach Boys and Lynyrd Skynyrd. “It was a Sunday ritual at home. My father would make me listen to new songs by his favourite artistes,” she says. After her introduction to dance music by her friend, Candice listened to Pete Tong, Paul Van Dyk and closer home, AR Rahman. “Something that motivates me about all of them is the experience they create apart from the pureness in their music. I strive towards delivering my best when I’m on stage, not just as a musician but as a full-scale performer because I’ve seen how it drives emotions amongst your audience.” When she’s not behind the decks, Candice enjoys listening to blues, contemporary jazz, deep house and hip-hop.

The artiste, who shuttles between Mumbai and Delhi, first performed in India as an entertainment coordinator for Indian Premier League (IPL) and soon became the official DJ of the cricket tournament and the Royal Challengers Bangalore team. “While touring for IPL, I had built a life here in India by getting two houses, a pet dog and making a lot of friends. Midway through the journey, it hit me that I had built a home for myself, not just a house,” she adds. The model-turned DJ was also seen in Salman Khan-starrer Sultan, which was her Bollywood debut. While she plans to give movies a try, Candice is currently focusing on The Remix, an Amazon Prime Video Original and recreating the Candice Redding Live show.

On March 24, 8 pm onwards.
At 788 Avenue, Jubilee Hills.
