Today Google released a doodle celebrating the life of Mexican-American singer Selena Quintanilla, better known simply as Selena, as a commemeration of the anniversary of her first studio album titled "Selena" released 28 years ago today.

The doodle's accompanying animation, set to Selena's hit song "Bidi Bidi Bom Bom", takes viewers from the star's childhood through her adult life as a performer with the help of colorful hand-drawn style animations.

The story of the doodle starts nearly two years ago when it first crossed the desk of Global Marketing Lead for Google Doodles, Perla Campos. Campos admitted in a report with billboard.com that she grew up in a similar situation as Selena, and felt personally connected to the project. She said that she wanted to take the time to perfect the doodle.

Campos and the Google Doodle team spent two years working with celebrated designers and animators as well as working closely with the superstar's family in order to accurately portray the musician's life.

Google has also released a special biographical exhibit on Selena as part of their online Arts & Culture museum.
