Akshay Kumar and Sonam Kapoor's appeal to help improve menstrual hygiene

As a run up to their upcoming film Padman, actors Akshay Kumar and Sonam Kapoor have released a new video that opens a conversation about menstrual hygiene. Titled #AbSamjhautaNahin - The Shopping List, the video is launched by Culture Machine's Blush in association with ITC Vivel,.

The video opens with Sonam reading out the monthly grocery list that includes odd items such as dirty rags to unsafe objects like ash, coconut husk and hay. What may seem like an innocuous list of household items on a shopping list for some, is unfortunately a de facto substitute to hygienic sanitary napkins for a majority of women in India. Akshay then goes on to explain that the only difference between this list (of a rural household) and the list of an urban woman's household is the missing 'sanitary pad'. 

Both the actors then bring attention to the grave situation of menstrual hygiene in the country. The video concludes with both of them requesting viewers to donate a minimum of Rs. 400 to The Vatsalya Foundation in order to facilitate a year-round availability of sanitary pads to women in various parts of the country.
