AR Rahman has a name that speaks for itself. His contribution to the music industry is noted for his unique fusions of Indian classical music with western beats. Even though he got a big break in Bollywood,  his music is even more recognized down south.

He made his debut with Mani Ratnam’s film Roja in 1992, the movie that won him the national award.And that was just the beginning of his journey in the world of music. Now after various accolades, on his 51st birthday, we present to you a curated list of his top ten songs that would always stay in our hearts and our playlists.

Rahman’s debut movie in Tamil was a national award-winning film. This song is a beautiful melody that still remains in our playlists for more than 25 years.

This song was a major chartbuster in Contemporary Tamil music. Its become one of the most popular songs of all time. Will.I.am from the Black Eyed Peas remade the version called It's my Birthday

Bombay – Uyire (1995)

The soundtrack of this film is known as a Masterpiece. The song was even included in The Guardian’s 1000 Albums to Hear Before You Die list.

Dil Se - Dil Se Re (1998)

Dil Se Re that means from the heart was sung by the Maestro himself. It was also chart-topper of the year 1998

Jeans - Poovukul Olinthirikum  (1998)

This song that is set n six different countries has Aishwarya Rai in it, where she’s described as the eighth world wonder.

Taal - Taal Se Taal Mila (1999)

This movie marked the beginning of the famed collaboration between A. R. Rahman and Subhash Ghai. The soundtrack was a big commercial success.


Alaipayudhey - Pachai Niramai (2000)

The song won him the Filmfare Award for Best Music Director and was well received by the audience.


Rang De Basanti - Khalbali (2006)

This movie won him another Filmfare award and this song was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song nomination.

Guru - Tere Bina (2007)

This beautiful composition of a love ballad with the sufi style of music. This song was composed and performed by Rahman.

Slumdog Millionaire - Jai Ho (2008)

The song won an Academy Award for Best Original Song and a Grammy Award for Best Song Written for a Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media. It was also the official campaign song of the Indian National Congress during the 2009 election.This was the toast of the town in every part of the world with so many covers and remixes that were and posted on Youtube
