Miles Fest on June 2 will celebrate the music and life of the jazz legend

All proceeds from the grand opening of House of Miles East Saint Louis will benefit its enrichment programs that involve arts, music and community programs.

The house where American jazz trumpeter and creative genius Miles Davis, who was born in Alton, Illinois, spent nearly whole of his early life, will hold an official public opening during House of Miles East Saint Louis’ inaugural Miles Fest on June 2.

Located at 1701 in Kansas Ave, now honorarily named Miles Davis Way, Davis’ former boyhood home has undergone extensive gutting and renovation since 2015.

House of Miles East Saint Louis, which adopted the acronym HOME, provides numerous enrichment programs for youth, including gardening, cultural/social and music program, to empower through education and learning. All proceeds from the grand opening of House of Miles East Saint Louis will benefit its enrichment programs that involve arts, music and community programs.

The grand opening event will feature tours of the Miles Davis boyhood home, an art show with Mykael Ash, who will have artwork available for purchase, a National Museum of African Americans on Stamps (NMAAS) display, educational enrichment centers self-guided tours, live music, and Miles’ favorite foods samples. Artifacts displayed in the intimate museum setting will include items of clothing, art, music, decoration, old coins, found photographs that were left in the house and novelty objects, such as ornaments and glass bottles.

Currently the nonprofit is working on an educational packet for distribution to educational facilities to encourage educational field trips to the site. The evening of jazz will celebrate the music and life of the jazz legend.
