An individual’s life today is defined not by freedom of choices but by the restrictions and boundaries that one lives with. This in turn leads to unrest and chaos in the mind. It is with this idea that Dhwani, an artistic collaboration by three dance organ-isations in Bengaluru will be staged this weekend at Shoonya.

A contemporary and experimental performance, Dhwani has been conceptualised and choreographed by three dance institutes Left Foot Right Danceworks (LFRD), Bangalore School of Performing Arts (BSPA) and The Intensive.

Nearly 40 dancers from all the three institutes will present three dance performances that are connected by a single theme. LFRD will present Boundaries, BSPA will stage Balance and Rest.Less is by The Intensive. “In Bound-aries, the movements are sharp and chaotic in nature with a lot of jumps and fast-paced steps. Balance is a combination of fluid movements that are graceful, while in Rest.Less there are no defined steps, with movements transitioning from one to another smoothly,” ex-plains Shrabani S Das, founder and managing director, LFRD.

A deeper purpose of each of these pieces, adds Shrabani, is to understand the questions and norms set by society. Boundaries questions the perimeters set by society whether real, imaginary, physical, religious or political. Balance explores the equilibrium between virtues and vices and depicts how life swings back and forth like a pendulum. Rest.Less explores a mind that is full of thoughts both in the conscious
and subconscious states.

The entire show has taken three months to be put together. While the performances are certainly the highlight of the evening, Dhwani also includes a flamenco performance by Archana Kumar and two performances by up-and -coming contemporary dance artistes. “The first dance piece is a narration on peace, while the second piece is a Broadway Bollywood Jazz performance — these are by our students,” says Shrabani. The entire dance troupe is a motley group of street dancers, ballet dancers, and theatre and movement artistes. “There will be an open feedback session after the show to know what the audience thinks about our performances and ideas that we have showcased. It is sort of an artistic exploration,” she offers. Dhwani, she says, is a conscious effort by artistes to explore the different attributes of society and how people perceive it.
