The Latin Festival Madras is back with a bigger line-up of dancers. Featuring 15 dance trainers and over 200 attendees, the festival, which is organised by Salsa Madras in partnership with Indulge, is one of the biggest dance festivals in the country. However, Arun Srinivasan, founder of Salsa Madras, plans to make it bigger and cash in on the craze for beach festivities. “This year, on the first day, dancers from around the world will meet at Covelong Point and take part in the revelry with dance and music for a good 12 hours!” says Arun, adding that the five-day event will be held across three venues this time around — Covelong Point, Taj Gateway and Pondicherry. “While the first day is all about meeting up and getting comfortable with each other for the dancers, the remaining days will have the workshops on salsa, kizomba and bachata,” he adds.
This year, the biggest names in the line-up of trainers are Frankie Martinez, Gupson Pierre and singer Daddy Killa. “Frankie is a legend in the world of salsa. He is around 40 years old, and is one of the best dancers in the world,” Arun shares, adding that Gupson Pierre is one of the oldest in the circuit. The Canadian is 60 and is the artistic director of Attitude Dance Studios.
Other names in the line-up include Dotty Ujszazsi (Hungary), Mabel Kok (Malaysia), Saori Watanabe, Deepak Stephen (India/Russia), and others. Among the workshops, we recommend the six-hour bootcamp with Azlan and Mabel. There is also a kalaripayattu workshop by Deepak Stephen and aerial silk workshop by Julia Pauer. “We have also ensured the food options are top notch this time, with treats from Surf Turf, Taj Gateway, Mango Hill, Swirl Bar and more,” he says, adding that accommodation has been arranged at the Taj Gateway.

September 21-26. Tickets online on their website.
