After having staged over 350 shows across the country over a decade, city-based theatre group Perch is celebrating its 10th year by reviving their popular adaptation of Ki Rajanarayanan’s folktale, Kira Kozhumbu. The occasion also marks the 95th birthday of the acclaimed Tamil author, who is affectionately addressed as Ki Ra. Kira Kozhumbu is being staged after seven years, says Rajiv Krishnan, founder of Perch, and director of the play. “We haven’t performed it since 2010 because the actors were not available. But we were approached this year because it is the writer’s 95th birthday. Hence, it seemed like a good reason to revive it,” he explains, adding that he was introduced to this story when a friend translated it into English for him.

The light and humourous play presents stories weaved around three primary characters — a haughty eagle, a confused chicken and a snake who always enjoys good luck. The three protagonists are performed by Anand Sami, Kalieswari Srinivasan and Ravindra Vijay. “We have incorporated a simple and engaging storytelling narrative in this play, and have punctuated them with folk songs and dance,” Rajiv informs.
While the rehearsals have been going on for a fortnight, the costumes have been designed by Kaveri Lalchand of K Clothing, who is also a member of their group. “The play is suitable for all ages and we are planning to stage it in Pondicherry and Coimbatore next,” says Rajiv.
