Popularly known as “The Yogi” from his one-by-two stand up show called The Yogi and The Bear, Alexander Babu’s first solo show takes the nostalgic route to Tamil music, cinema and childhood. Titled Alex in Wonderland, the 60-minute show will be a musical of sorts we are told. “I plan on playing the harmonium, and the bongos and maybe a couple other instruments too,” shares the comedian, who is a trained Carnatic vocalist and Yoga instructor too.

Known for his subtle humour on topics like religion in the country, Alex, a Tamilian Christian, believes that his varied background is what gives him the direction. “I usually have people asking me how I can be a Christian and a yoga practitioner and a Carnatic singer at the same time. But for me, I am a fan of positivity and happy people and I find it in what I do,”.

Born and raised in Chennai, the 41-year-old tells us to expect songs from across the spectrum of Tamil cinema during the show.  “Though the show is in English, it will be peppered with Tamil music, from M S Vishwanathan to A R Rahman. That is what lends character and feeling to the show.” In the Coimbatore as part of his seven-city tour, the show will deal with music, religion, relationships and more.

Alex who finished scripting his show in about four months, debuted his solo show at Mumbai earlier this month. Talking about language barriers and tweaking scripts to suit audiences, the comedian says, “The internet has made things a level playing field, both for the performer and the audience. Improv only accounts for about 15 per cent of the show, the rest is always according to the script.”

While international tours are on the cards, musical collaborations are something one can look forward to in the near future. “Music is something I am very passionate about. Collaborations are not yet finalised. I am currently in the process of mulling if my shows should completely feature only English music, unlike present scripts.”

On September 16, at SITRA auditorium from 7 pm. Rs 300 onwards. Details: in.bookymyshow.com
