The Seven Steps

The Seven Steps is described as Friends meets Sartre’s No Exit, and that had our attention. The play by The Renegade Art And Theatre Society is about three friends having a conversation on the topic of marriage. “We wanted to give voice to the youth’s thoughts on this topic that is rarely spoken about in this light-hearted tone,” says Ravi D’Abreo, the director.

The character Ayesha is getting married in an hour and she is having a conversation with her childhood friends, Harsh and Roy, about marriage. Ayesha is a modern Bengaluru girl going to marry the man of her dreams. All three 30-somethings have had their own experiences when it comes to relationships. They discuss the fragility of marriage, how easily people give up on it, and the nature of identity and individuality within the institution. “The three characters are childhood friends, in a way that was only possible in old Bangalore. They grew up together and can have discussions on any topic without any conflict, even though they all have differing points of views,” says Ravi. The play presents just a slice of life, and is not meant to be a hard-hitting piece on the topic. There are no right or wrong viewpoints. The play stars Pooja Hegde, Mario Jerome and Siddarth Selvaraj.

“A year or so ago, the four of us decided to challenge each other and write about topics and themes that were around us. And we came upon this topic,” Ravi tells us about the play’s conception. The set of the play is very minimal; it is the script and the scenes that take centrestage. “In fact, it can even be performed in someone’s living room,” adds Ravi. There are some video and musical elements as well. The  Renegade Art And Theatre Society was founded in 2006 and has always staged plays relevant to youth. Ravi plans to take this play to other cities next. “Even though it is set in Bengaluru and has a few phrases of Kannada here and there for effect, the play is relevant for any urban audience,” Ravi signs off.
