Scyuaz Me! Mallika Dua has a new show on TLC featuring Bollywood celebrities and we cannot keep calm

A little over two years ago, a viral video shot by studio A little Anarky and Little Black Book (Delhi), titled S**t People Say: Sarojini Nagar Edition, not only went viral but also gave us an overnight star, in the form of comedienne Mallika Dua. But the Delhi-based Dua was an Internet sensation of sorts already, thanks to her Dubsmash videos of old Pan Parag commercials, Amrish Puri dialogues and the evergreen Shopkeeper and Chutki exchanges on her Instagram account that had garnered plenty of likes and shares. This led to her being a part of many web series’, including Girlyappa, The Trip and AIB’s hilarious sketch, A Woman’s Besties. Dua, who is also famous for her sketches on social media in her various avatars (Aunty Shagun, Make-up Didi, Tinder Aunty) and her distinct accent (think ‘Scyuaz Me’) will now be seen on TLC’s Midnight Misadventures, where she will don an all-new avatar and interact with celebrity guests in her signature style. In a chat with Indulge from Mumbai, the comedy queen tells us more.

All that sass
In Midnight Misadventures, Dua plays a sassy character named Shalishka. She describes Shalishka as “confident, innately kind, privileged, misinformed, graceful and glamorous. Shalishka is a sort of food heiress, culinary art has been in her family for generations,” Dua tells us of the character that she played for the first time last year for another show. “Most of the other characters I play are desi and relatable. But Shalishka is not relatable to anyone, or even me for that matter, which is what makes her so much fun to play. Her whole persona is that she doesn’t want to be relatable to anybody. I think deep inside somewhere, all of us want to be in that position where we are so above everything and we don’t need to care about anything at all.”

Star struck
One of the most important aspects of the show is, of course, the celebrity guests who come to Shalishka’s house for a chat, and the hilarious activities that they end up doing together. For instance, we see Baadshah rapping for Shalishka while she dances with her two left feet, comedian Tanmay Bhatt applying an avocado face pack with her and actor Rajkummar Rao who Shalishka has a crush on, waltzing with her. Actors like Vicky Kaushal, Radhika Apte, Huma Qureshi, comedienne Kaneez Surka and YouTuber Bhuvan Bam also make an appearance in the 10 episode series. “I am a very shy and reserved person and the only way I get to meet people is through shows like these. That is why for the show, I insisted on playing a character and not being myself. That said, every single celebrity who came on the show was a blast to be with and brought with them a little element of originality.”

The daughter of journalist Vinod Dua (who also features in some of her Dubsmash videos), Mallika tells us of her Tamilian heritage when we ask her about her recent trip to Puducherry, where she was shooting for the second season of her web series Trip 2. “My mother is actually Tamilian, but I only speak a little bit of Tamil when she does. But my trip to Puducherry was a such a blast, especially since it was my first trip to the south,” she signs off.
